Re: Your rules for character creation?

I find that in a straight point-buy system, all characters tend to look alike. I follow these steps: 1) players roll their characters (3d6 for most stats, 2d6+6 for INT and SIZ), appropriate dice for other races. 2) Female human characters have the option to take -2 to STR and -2 to SIZ. (Sexual dim...

Re: Priestly Sorcerers

Well, historically in the real world they are different. Many cultures make a distinction between priests and sorcerers. Medieval Europe, Medieval Islam and Medieval Judaism to name three examples. Even people like the Norse make a distinction between priests and sorcerers, with sorcerers being fea...

Re: Priestly Sorcerers

And right here, I'm trying to think of a mechanism that allows Sorcery and Divine Magic to coexist, other than the incompatible mechanisms provided in Legend Core Rulebook and Arcania of Legend: Blood Magic . You got the point! There is a gaming paradigm (and I might add it has no relation to magic...

Re: Traveller 2300 Game Query

A grav scanner will tell you someone else is using a stutterwarp within 150 AU, but not range, direction or any other details, just if it's on or off.. Err, not to derail this, but gravity travels at the speed of light, and if you can detect gravity waves I am assuming you should also be able to te...

Priestly Sorcerers

Pre-gaming fantasy fiction, also folklore and mythology, generally do not separate the roles of cleric and wizard the way that most gaming does. Somehow, we see divine magic and sorcerous magic as being completely separate, competing systems. However; Thoth-Amon was a priest of Set. Rezo the Red Pri...

Re: Classic Fantasy Coming to the Legend System

How does one respond to this? How about:  Woohoo! Woohoo! :D Happy Dance! :D Happy Dance! :D Seriously - I love my historical settings, my swords-n-sorcery, and my plot-based campaigns with detailed NPC's and motivations. But I've been gaming since '75, and an old-fashioned dungeon crawl ...

Re: Concert Spells - My Version

I agree with the need for Concert Casting as an ability. I've read through your write-up, but not play-tested it yet. Participants cannot move; This might be a little extreme. I think you mean that they must stay in the same general spot that they started, chanting, swaying, dancing, as required. Bu...

Harder Spells / Easier Spells

Idea: Some spells take a penalty to the chance to cast, but give a bonus to the power of the spell. Likewise, some spells have a bonus to cast, but suffer a penalty on the power and manipulation ability of the spell. This gives an expert sorcerer greater than normal power, while allowing an apprenti...

Re: Arcania of Legend: The Four Elemental Ways

I am very much looking forward to this. I would like to see a (short) chapter on alternate elemental systems. Either the Chinese listed above - or the Japanese (which, oddly, does not follow the Chinese, but uses Earth-Air-Fire-Water-Void) - or how about an African elemental system (Earth-Fire-Water...

Re: Spells of Legend

Peeps - I'm writing something that, I hope, will make it into print as part of the Spells of Legend book proposed. Even if my chapter never makes it into print, would you like to know about Shadow Bags and Ghost Rings, Lightning Rods, tonics, comestibles, talismans, periapts, magic clay and golem o...

Re: Adventure Design for Legend

Yeah, my proposal is a long build-up for the scenario you are talking about. You could drop some of the steps (for example; the treasure map and unleashing the curse). The whole point of my proposal is to try to have the players to have an emotional investment in the town and its people. Also, to pr...

Re: Adventure Design for Legend

Tias - I'd start by backing up a step. You say the players are in employ of the overlord of the realm. Give them a mission to go to Hearthtree before the lord gets possessed . Have them meet the lord of Hearthtree (perhaps they are part of a diplomatic party). Give them reasons to like them. He goes...

Re: Adventure Design for Legend

Ummm - Actually the mechanic is to set the number of required successes before three failures based on the difficulty of the task, and the number of different skills that can be applied to it. I just used a 3/3 as an example. An easy task for beginners might require only one success before three fai...

Re: Adventure Design for Legend

These are some excellent examples. One idea from 4th Editions D&D was the "skill challenge". Put simply, the characters attempt to roll on a number of different skills. The goal is to get a GM-set number of successes before there is an aggregate of 3 failures. Using the "crossing the marsh" example ...

Re: Adventure Design for Legend

Don't make any encounter solvable by only one way. It is better to say "You have fallen into a pit with walls of mud" and let the players work out how to get out (climbing, balancing on each other's shoulders, throwing a rope with a hook on the end, tunnelling out) than saying "You have fallen into...

Re: Whats Mongoose Publishing planning next?

I regret to say there will be no further Elric books forthcoming in the foreseeable future. Well, blast. Any chance of a "Runes of Legend' supplement? I use Rune magic from Elric as Egyptian magic in my fantasy earth setting. It's a good system, and I'd like to see it continued. Sorry that we won't...

I like this idea. I've seen too many cases where players had to blow 2 or 3 hero points trying to buy off one bad roll.

I'll use it.

Re: Doing my bit to mess with sorcerers

Loz and Delariad - I can see the point ( Golden Voyage of Sinbad is one of my favorite movies), but I'm not sure I want to make life that miserable for sorcerers. I allow and encourage playing sorcerers, so I don't want to screw over a PC with a permanent crippling if things go wrong. I've often bee...

Re: Hero Points and Blessings

I think that instead of setting it by a number of hours (which adds to the bookking needed in the game) I'd suggest setting it to last through a single plot situation; such as a single fight, or a single journey, etc.
