Re: Higher initiative and Ambushes
If you walked into a clearing and saw someone standing there, pointing a gun at you. I am not sure that qualifies as an Ambush. Now, if you walked into a clearing and bullets started flying your way from an unknown location (because I was smart enough to hide in the bushes before you got there); th...

Re: Playtest requirements?
Generally, you should: - Run it exactly as written, without any change, tweak or otherwise - Take notes of your preparation time and effort, especially where you feel you have struggled or if something really works well - Write-up notes about your experience of running it as written, and what worked...

Re: Advocate Specialities
I have to agree with nawara. While I understand the desire to break this (and many other) skills down to a much greater granular level, we need to keep playability in mind. I can't imagine very many games require Advocate (Environmental Law) for example. Yet that is what one of the lawyers I work w...

Re: Roll 2D in Order for your Stats
Absolutely. Combine with the suggestion of points-buy and simplify. All six characteristics start with a 0 CharMod. Adjust up or down, -2/+2 max thresholds, all stats keeping the total equal to zero. Characteristic creation complete. If the Referee wants to allow a little more competence, make the ...

Re: Roll 2D in Order for your Stats
In practice, it's the DMs from the characteristics (rather awkwardly called Characteristic Modifiers in the rules, which sounds to me like they should modify characteristics ..,) that are the most important thing in play. Absolutely. Combine with the suggestion of points-buy and simplify. All six c...

Re: Higher initiative and Ambushes
Personally, I have more of an issue with the Bane applied to the Ambushed. I see the Boon as reward enough to the Ambusher without complicated the Ambushed life any further! I think a Bane is appropriate as an ambushed person is they are likely to suffer from the, "what the....?!" moment of inactio...

Re: Roll 2D in Order for your Stats
A core book - an introductory book - should have clear simple rules to follow, and not be dependent on an experienced referee's fiat. If you only put random generation in, it will put off potential new players - I can guarantee that. Yes. This. Total agreement. +1 Ditto. You can't write a core rule...

Re: Advocate Specialities
I'm not an expert - I just have friends in law who seemed highly amused that Advocate could cover interstellar law so cleanly and simply! I might suggest the following, but believe that any Skill check should have increased Difficulty wherever a Traveller practices outside his home system! An additi...

Re: Higher initiative and Ambushes
Desired action sounds reasonable. Then again, not all ambushes go to plan; despite setting up a successful ambush a "slow" ambusher might waste their advantage. That would justify the chances as given in the example above. I have to agree with Stainless, an ambush can go awry. The Boon doesn't by a...

Advocate Specialities
Having read through the Skills section and discussed it with friends, I can't see how Advocate isn't a root with Specialities. To take a real world sense check, you can't practice law in Scotland with only a knowledge of English law. Equally, an individual trained in corporate law would not stand up...

Any update on shipping the pre-orders? Still looking for mine, and my FLGS no longer has their copy. Getting a bit twitchy. I got my pre-order at the end of last week, but I live in the UK. I dare say, the extra distance to Canada will mean an extra (mandatory) period of (guaranteed 30% extra fun) ...

You might want to track down a copy of 'The DOA Sector Travelogue', written by, amongst others, Steve Gilbert (Me and My Shadow Mark IV, PARANOIA: The Mandatory Card Game) and Allen Varney (too many PARANOIA books to mention), which includes a large poster map of DOA Sector. Copies of 'The DOA Secto...

I have no crystal ball... but, I should imagine a new edition of the game will have a new screen (or screens) in due course. Alternatively, watch out at online auction sites or download from DriveThruRPG and make your own!

Wondering whether you should buy? Why let Traveller players have all the fun facing certain death before they've finished character creation? Why start a game of PARANOIA with just the other players hating and loathing you, when you can have a fully rounded background of threats and vendettas from a...

Couple of ideas for Option 1: A. Bomb Shelter . Alpha Complex was built to provide a retreat in case of disaster. Unfortunately, the disaster that struck wasn't the one expected and the people due to populate the complex failed to make it inside in time. What really happened? Who was responsble? And...
