Re: Shipping in the OTU is cheap!

I will try again and then give up. The free trader is paid 1000Cr per ton of cargo. That cargo could be 100tons of uranium that nets the seller several billion credits (I exaggerate) - the ship is cheap compared with the profit made by trade. You do not ship 100t of rubber ducks from Boskone3 to Dey...

Re: Shipping in the OTU is cheap!

How much does it cost to put 100t of cargo into orbit at today's prices? How much are the rockets needed to do it? The Falcon heavy may get the price down to $2200 per kg, that is $220,000,000 to shift that 100 tons - and only into LEO. Assuming 1Cr to 1$ you could buy four MgT2e free traders outrig...

Re: Shipping in the OTU is cheap!

Ships in Traveller are cheap, fusion power is cheap, so of course shipping is cheap. If it was expensive you wouldn't do it, it would be more economical to exploit all the resources in your own system using fusion powered grav drive ships than jump to another world to trade with them, which would ma...

Re: Ships with 7G and higher acceleration

Both T5 and MgT HG2e have raised the maximum limit for maneuver drives. T5 is the go to canon for the OTU these days so it is odd that legacy designs are not rebuilt to the new technology paradigm as was done for MegaTraveller, TNE, GT...

In the original Aslan article in JTAS the final few paragraphs had role playing Aslan tips and it said the closest human culture to take inspiration from are the Samurai.

Re: What are good forums to discuss *Classic* Traveller?

You will get a reply from CotI - it just may take a day or two since it is done manually by Aramis.

In the meantime if you have any CT questions just ask them here, there are some really helpful and knowledgable folks on these boards :)

Re: Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

There are mysterious aliens in RSG too - humanoid psionic aliens that have been kidnapped, imprisoned and experimented upon. I don't think they have ever been identified either.

Re: Who are the aliens in DA01 ‘Shadows’?

The Shadows alien builders are not the Droyne. They are/were a race that have died out or gone away long before the Vilani began exploring the stars. The presence of the coyns is a mystery: the shadows aliens built this base to study the Ancients the coyns were left by accident by earlier explorers ...

Re: Nuts and bolts of the Imperium (gov't - how it works)

I disagree, sort of. I can see how someone could be granted a weapon as you use in your example, but if that were the case then every Imperial citizen could carry around all of their guns beyond the starport because they have Imperial permits to do so since starport - Imperial - law level is often l...

Re: Nuts and bolts of the Imperium (gov't - how it works)

There are two versions of the T4 Milieu 0 Campaign - the first is paperback and is not very good. The second is hardback and is an absolute must have for anyone who wants to write anything about the Imperium, much more detailed and a lot more info in it. As to your question, right from the first adv...

Re: Is SOC per society?

Depends on the society.

In the good old US it is much easier to buy social position with wealth, in the UK you are still looked down upon by the nobility even if you have ten times their money - different societies different ways of recognising social status.

Metric units only please - what is this thing you call an ounce?

More seriously that works out to 78.9 metric tons... (5.6 displacement tons)

at Cr10 per 28g you are looking at MCr28.2

Re: Is SOC per society?

He's part of the Victorian middle class. Due to his lack of spending Soc 6, but once he starts openly displaying his wealth by splashing the cash, dressing well, getting out and about his Soc may rise to the loft heights of 8. He doesn't make enough money to be upper middle class.

Re: High Guard 2e - Solar Panels

My numbers are real world based, with the final entry being about 90% efficient for a solar panel in Earth's orbit. [A black globe tech solar panel would generate 1361-1365 W/m^2] Move closer to the sun and you will generate more power, move away and you will generate less, jump to a different star ...

Re: High Guard 2e - Solar Panels

After further research, power output is per square metre of panel:
TL6 125 W - 25% degradation per year of use
TL7 250 W - 10% degradation per year
TL8 500 W no degradation if maintained
TL9 750 W
TL10 1kW
TL11 1.25kW

Re: High Guard 2e - Solar Panels

0.25% is on Earth, much more in space. In the example a panel degraded by 14% in seven years, which would be about 58% in 40 years, hence a safety margin of 200% would leave a life-length of 32 years. We generally assume spacecraft systems have better life-lengths. Yup, I misread the footnote. Stil...

Re: High Guard 2e - Solar Panels

Since I do know the conversion rate for CT (250MW per EP) if I go with that 500,000 square metres of solar array are needed ... Plus a safety margin, since solar panels degrade in space¹, that would be something like a million square metres per EP. ¹ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-based_solar_...

Re: High Guard 2e - Solar Panels

I want clearer rules for solar panels as power supply for space stations or asteroid facility/processing operations. These facilities would be in orbit in the good solar capture area, not too far from the sun. I am not worried about Thrust 1, this is a facility that has been placed in orbit, built ...
