Re: Ship Design Philosophy

If that's the case then the designers have deliberately gone against CT HG, CT TCS, MT, TNE, T4 etc.

Re: Do jump nets make the Beowulf obsolete?

MT SSoM referred to a jump bubble but it was a reference to a bubble of normal spacetime surrounding the ship. The idea that this was filled with hydrogen is pure MgT.

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

Yup, you have to adjust the scale - 10km range bands and velocities measured in km/s. You still use the 6 second round of personal combat. A combat in or around orbit is going to involve ships moving at orbital velocities initially (7km/s), even deep space encounters between ships on hohmann transfe...

Re: Do jump nets make the Beowulf obsolete?

CT used lanthanum in the drive coils. The metal used in the hull grid was never specified. A lanthanum hull grid was DGPism in MT. Starship hulls contain as an integral part of their structure a network of wiring which maintains the jump field around the ship. Without this field, the natural physics...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

There is an old saying - once you are in orbit you are halfway to anywhere in the solar system. The delta V to achieve orbit is the killer, once in orbit that same delta V (if you could refuel) is enough to get you to just about anywhere in the solar system. It may take a few weeks, months or years....

Re: Quark Reactors

Looking at this from a Traveller technologies angle: mesons are quark/antiquark pairs - Traveller technology can make mesons and manipulate them nuclear dampers affect the strong nuclear force - which interacts with quarks. So perhaps there is a way to re-task meson and damper tech to generate the q...

Re: Quark Reactors

Actually we can make, store and experiment with antimatter now. It would only be a matter of scaling up production (a solar powered antimatter factory close to the sun) and improving our storage technology. If money were invested we could have a working antimatter reactor before a fusion reactor. We...

Hull provides no damage reduction only scaled damage absorption.
What happens in MgT when you fire a HMG at a starship?

Bull - even zero percent hulls are the equivalent of tank armour, the design system just doesn't account for it properly. Unlike TNE etc...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

We've had pretty good radar since TL6, there is no sensible reason not to have spacecraft with radar. Ladar is currently available at TL7, not to mention IR sensors, radio detection sensors etc.

The TL restrictions on spacecraft sensors are a bit silly IMHO

Re: Quark Reactors

And where do you get the free quarks from to fuse in the first place? Unmaking protons and neutrons to free up quarks just so you can fuse the quarks... Bottom quarks, as used in the theory, are heavier than protons, so cannot be contained in the protons. You have to make them by concentrating ener...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

You actually have to create hardpoints on the superstructure, and unless the weapon system is wholly external, weapon systems tend to have specific dimensions that have to be accommodated within the hull. Since bay weapons are standardized across the known universe, the design system can give us th...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

Which makes more work than necessary and also isn't always correct. It's already done for you in GT:ISW, and is correct enough for our purposes. Some real world designs have large amount of surface area, but very few points to mount equipment. ( Blimps for example.) Lol, the hardpoint would be base...

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

Scrap hardpoint limitations.

Go with FF&S surface area limits instead.

Or take a look at GT:ISW where the hardpoint limits are based on available surface area and hull configuration rather than 1 per 100t of volume.

Re: Issue with the Zarelinung (Great Rift preview)

You miss the point - collector technology allows the entire Zhodani fleet to cross the Spinward Marches to any target using empty hexes. The final assault would be conducted with enough energy stored to jump away - you use your collector 1 hex from Rhylanor and build up anough for a jump 3 - you use...

Another problem, collector based Zhodani warships could empty hex jump all the way across the SM... the setting would be very different.

Re: Ship Design Philosophy

If I were rebuilding the RCES Clipper class using MgT HG2e I would use "External Cargo Mount and Docking Clamps cover the external systems with breakaway hulls giving another way to handle the situation." So a 600t spine with docking clamps for all of the 'modules' to be fitted. The 'modules' are be...

Re: Issue with the Zarelinung (Great Rift preview)

And you have just spotted why the collector technology in T5 and MgT breaks the setting. The original Annic Nova version required a nearby star and took 1-6 weeks - no deep space jumps without recharge times measured in years or decades (now there is an interesting thought...) the version we have no...

Pocket empires aren't allowed, they shouldn't have a colony world. As soon as the colony wants self determination and petitions the Imperium for membership the Imperium should intervene, it doesn't. It turns a blind eye and allows one planet to send mercs to attack another - common practice in the f...
