Re: Hop Drive

It's deeper than that: My question is, the point the earth is orbiting - is it where the sun is now, or where it was 8 minutes ago, or is it something less obvious? (ignoring the effect of the earth on the sun, of course) We are orbiting - following the geodesic in curved spacetime - the curvature ...

Re: Hop Drive

The answer to that is even easier. The planet travels in a straight line - its just that line is curved by the mass of the star, it is called a geodesic. If the star were to suddenly vanish the spacetime would start to flatten and a certain time later the planet is no longer following a curved path ...

Re: Hop Drive

Gross simplification time. If you are shooting at a moving target do you aim at where it is or where you think it will be by the time you pull the trigger and the bullet gets there? The thing about gravity - Newtonian or general relativity - is if you plug the numbers in you can calculate where your...

Re: Hop Drive

Traveller background in CT and MT days was written from the point of view of in-universe authors and was sometimes wrong, misleading or containing hidden truths, the Aslan's major race status for example. There is something iffy about the Vilani/Geonee competition for early dominance. The Vilani had...

Re: Hop Drive

Grandfather invented the jump drive (I have my own IMTU thoughts on that). The Vilani explored space using STL for a few decades, while the Geonee were building a jump drive based on recovered Ancient tech (according to the Vilani). The Vilani miraculously invented the jump drive with no outside hel...

Re: Apocalypse package & Library class Archive Ship

Winged Cat - have you read Agent of the Imperium? Marc's novel. Capital ships have makers that can fabricate maneuver drives for asteroids, an IISS ship leaves a maker and fusion+ power plant on a distant world to foster allegiance with the Imperium. All of this centuries before the golden era of 11...

Re: Hop Drive

Nope. Hop is not a higher order jump drive. It is a completely different technological paradigm for achieving FTL travel, as are the drives at even higher TLs. A hop drive culture may be amazed to discover a jump drive culture and have a wtf moment and then be able to reverse engineer the jump drive...

Re: Hop Drive

Jump drive technology and hop drive technology are fundamentally different. A TL9+ culture may discover the secret of jump drive, but then again they may not. Similarly a jump culture achieving TL16+ may never discover the hop drive, while another TL16+ culture that never discovered jump drive may d...

Re: Are we playing two different games?

Whenever I get a player to roll the dice for a skill saving throw I secretly roll 2d as well. Regardless of player success or failure 2 - a major complication 3-4 minor complication 5-9 character success with no additional complications or advantages 10-11 minor advantage 12 major advantage I got th...

Re: Are we playing two different games?

I agree with Moppy completely. Aircraft landings are so easy the vast majority land with no issue whatsoever. Even in adverse weather conditions the number of crashes is incredibly low, make an easy roll or don't bother if your stat+skill bonus make it unnecessary. I only require dice rolls if a sit...

Re: Are we playing two different games?

To the above post by Moppy Absolute bollocks :) In CT a skill level of 1 was enough to qualify you as a professional for your trade - see required skills for starship crew positions. edit - I have to apologise - I forgot the smiley so the post comes across as a bit snarky - it is meant to be a bit h...

Re: Sophontarianism?!? We are warriors!

Some quotes from pre-Mongoose Aslan sources: Some years after they [the Aslan] reached space, they encountered human traders also exploring new territories and, in the process, discovered that the universe was already filled with star-faring races. Initial contacts were peaceful... The stereotype of...

Re: Sophontarianism?!? We are warriors!

Heirate Aslan in the OTU don't keep slaves. Never have. Ever. In all pre-MgT sources there is not a single mention or even hint that Aslan ever had any slave taking or keeping culture. In point of fact they don't eat intelligent races either. But hey, MgT Aslan are kewel cos they are slave taking ba...

Re: Where is the non-nuclear EMP?

Look in HG2e for what they laughingly describe as an ion weapon (wonder where they ripped that off). It's affects are almost what you would expect from an emp projector. Ignore the description of anything to do with ions and instead go with it being a focussed emp.

Safari ships and corsairs are mustering out benefits in the OTU... Supplement 4: Citizens of the Imperium; and I forgot about the Noble's yacht benefit, and the belter's seeker... :)

In CT it was only the free trader that came with a mortgage.

System overview.

I have never heard of the computer game. But pirates :) I have no idea what this game will be like? How do the rules work? Is it a boardgame/cardgame with a bit of roleplaying or is it a roleplaying game? Can you fight ship battles? A preview of the rules, table of contents, components? And skeleton...

Except for the scout, you're not 'handed' starships.
You mean apart from the lab ship, the corsair and the safari ship.

It's why I always liked the monolithic 20t bridge - you could assume stuff like batteries, airlocks and the like are subsumed within it.

It is if it is an electric cable. This type of cable is trivial to bodge? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3c/Wolfe_Island_Wind_Project_Submarine_Power_Cable.jpg/489px-Wolfe_Island_Wind_Project_Submarine_Power_Cable.jpg And the necessary converter station is equally trivial to...
